Boating in the USVI and the BVI

Whether youre a first-time boater or an experienced captain, when it comes to chartering whether for the day or a few days, the Virgin Islands provides the worlds greatest waters for boating. Charter a boat, power or sail, and plan your own itinerary; stop at a few snorkeling spots, have a nice picnic on a deserted beach or a fun family trip to a neighboring island. Boat rental operators will advise you of the best locations to visit and provide you with maps and directions. They prefer you have some experience with navigating a boat and some require knowledge of local waters. Captains are available, if necessary, for an extra fee. Day charter prices vary based on type and size of boat.
Any boating you do should include St. John and the serene National Park beaches. You will have to pick up a mooring at most of these spots. Check out the St. John map for all beaches. Most popular spots are Honeymoon Beach which has all sorts of water toy rentals available from VI Ecotours; Trunk Bay which has an underwater snorkeling trail; Cinnamon Bay with a long, white sand beach and shallow, aqua blue water, and a watersports rental business. For one of the best snorkeling experiences go to Water Lemon Cay in Leinster Bay.
You can venture to the British Virgin Islands for the day but be aware that you will have to have a passport to do so. And you will have to check into BVI customs at the nearest point to your final destination. There you will have to pay a visitor visit fee and also an exit tax of $15 per person. Recommended places to visit there are Foxys and the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke where you can try the world famous Painkiller.
